Students will identify the <ir>, <ur> spelling pattern in words and sort them. The letters ur, er, ir or ear can stand for the <ur> sound, as in fur, her, bird, and earn. The letters ear and eer can stand for the <ir> sound, as in fear and deer.
Procedures for Lesson
1.Have the following words written on the SMART board: squirm, nerve, year, lurk, spur, sneer, stern, blurt, verse. 2.Discuss the ir, ur sounds that can be made. 3.Have the class create a list of words that also have the ir, ur sounds. 4.When a list of about 20 words has been created create 2 tables in SMART notebook. 5.Label one table ir and create 4 columns under.Label one column er, ir, ur, and ear. 6.Label the other table ur and create 2 columns under.Label one column ear and the other eer. 6.Students can come up to the SMART board and move the words into the correct column depending on the ur, ir sound and spelling.
Assessment or Evaluation
Students will then have a similar assignment to complete on their own. I will also use classroom observations as students are coming to the SMART board to answer.
Enrichment
Students will continue to use these words throughout the week in different ways.
